We like the way the handles feel in our hands, and it’s easy to keep clean. The only drawbacks are that the knife blade is a bit pointy (it might gouge toast), and the spoon bowls are too elongated for our liking.

It’s also the least expensive set in our test.

But some testers found the handles a bit too thin and stiff, and they weren’t a fan of the small fork tines or spoon bowls. The rounded knife blade also looked too much like a butter knife and made some people worry about kids using it.

New Rooftop Bar at Tommie Hollywood

Named for a flower found in the desert, this open-air rooftop bar on top of tommie Hollywood serves cocktails and views with a dose of cowboy culture. Cacti and yucca surround the venue, with décor that channels vintage Palm Springs and Pioneertown. Weekly line dancing classes and curated live music round out the offerings.

Rooftop Lounge

Named for a Mojave wildflower and occupying the space that used to house Wes Avila’s destination Mexican restaurant Ka’Teen, this vaguely Western-themed rooftop bar offers a surprisingly relaxed nightlife experience, with city views, live rock and country music, and the rare L.A. crowd that unironically likes to dress in cowboy gear.

Despite a somewhat stuck-up appearance, the swanky rooftop bar has a charmingly kitschy vibe that evokes vintage Palm Springs and Pioneer Town. A Seesburg ’67 jukebox greets visitors as they walk up from the elevator, and a slew of cacti and yucca help create a laid-back desert atmosphere in the heart of Tinseltown.

A cocktail menu that leans heavy on tequila and mezcal helps guests channel the country vibe, with drinks like the Ring of Fire (Bruxo Mezcal, Ancho Reyes Verde, prickly pear, lemon and ginger honey) and the zingy Walk the Line (Bombay Dry Gin, glitter-infused Combier Le Bleu, Prosecco, cucumber and simple syrup). A house band performs nightly starting around 10pm, transforming the bar’s area into a small dance floor.

Bar

Located atop the Tommie Hollywood, Desert 5 Spot brings a touch of Palm Springs, Joshua Tree hideouts, and cosmic Americana to the downtown skyline. The lounge and bar is a laid-back spot to sip cocktails, savor street food from celebrity chef Wes Avila, or dance the night away. Designed by Studio Collective and styled by Wade Crescent and Bernadette Blanc, the interior evokes feelings of a carefree road trip through California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. The space is adorned with throwback furnishings and unique accent pieces like custom-built neon signs, Gibson guitars, and a plethora of distinct cacti and yucca.

With breathtaking city views and live rock and country music, this western-inspired rooftop bar is the newest nightlife destination for LA’s trendy crowd. A mechanical bull, line dancing classes, and a menu of tequila and mezcal-based drinks are also on offer to keep the party going.

Restaurant

Channeling vintage Palm Springs and Pioneertown, the new rooftop bar at Tommie Hollywood is a little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll. The aptly titled Desert 5 Spot, which opened in December 2021, hosts everything from mechanical bull riding and monthly line dancing to a bar menu stocked with drinks and snacks including the signature Ring of Fire cocktail made with Bruxo mezcal, Ancho Reyes verde, prickly pear, lemon and ginger honey.

Designed by Studio Collective and styled by Wade Crescent and Bernadette Blanc, the vibe harkens back to 1970s vintage Palm Springs with mushroom wallpaper and a Seesburg jukebox, while cacti and yucca plants are accented with pops of red and yellow. The space also includes an inside stage where live musical acts perform country, rock and Americana tunes. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 5:30pm to 2am.
